Rev. John Rowland

Heading 2

My name is John Rowland. My Wife, Lillie and I live in Wanchese, North Carolina. Wanchese, is a small fishing village located on an Island, between the Outer Banks and the mainland of Northeastern North Carolina, called Roanoke Island. Lillie is actually from Wanchese, born and raised. Her maiden name was Meekins, and for any of you who might be familiar with Roanoke Island, that is a "local" name.  She attended Manteo High School, and most of her family, still call Roanoke Island, home.  I am originally from the northern part of Virginia...what used to be a small town, called Fairfax. I grew up in Jerusalem Baptist Church, at Fairfax Station. We recently made a visit to my "small hometown". The only thing about it that is recognizable...is the name.  To the un-trained eye, like mine, it has been "digested" by Washington D.C.  You can't tell where one stops and the other starts.  We have been at the Outer Banks Baptist Church, since May 1, 2005.

Our church began as a "mission church" in 1985, which makes us still, a relativley new church.  We are a Bible believing church, a Bible teaching church, a Bible preaching church.  I often tell my people, that they are a Bible demanding church!! WE believe that there are "believers", and then, there are "disciples", based on John 8:31. As a church, this is our hearts desire, to "continue" in His Word, and to be "disciples indeed".  WE are a small congregation, made up of mostly retired folks, (this is a euphemism for "old people"..... I have Bibles that are 50 years old). I only mention this to folks, because I wouldn't want someone to visit our church expecting "head-banging music" and "light shows" and a young, skinny, pretty, pastor. Any and All are invited, but I never want to give someone the wrong impression. We do things the, "traditional way", (this is a euphemism for "the old fashioned way"), and make no apologies for it.  My personal "advertisement" for our church is, "we do church, the way it used to be done!"  We gather for prayer. We have "altar calls". We have Sunday School. We have a choir, a good choir. We meet Sunday morning, Sunday night, and Wednesday night. We sing hymns. We sing Bill and Gloria Gaither songs. We sing.....

"The B-I-B-L-E, yes that's the book for me,
I stand alone on the Word of God, the B-I-B-L-E!"

......because it's still true! Don't you love it!! We still sing....

"Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me,
I once was lost, but now I'm found, was blind, but now I see!"

.....because it's still true! And again, don't you love it?

But the bottom line is, we love Him, Jesus, because He first loved us. And whether the music be old or new, if it brings Him glory and honor, and recognition, we'll at least give it a try!

So, I really do hope that you"ll come by and visit us sometime.  If you're looking for a church that believes the Bible... as is... front to back ... and loves the Bible God ... not some new-wave, man-made, fits into the world... version... and if you could feel at home with some "retired folk", who will love you, and accept you, and welcome you.. just like you are... then you come on by, 216 West First Street, in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina.. just one block West of HWY. 158 at mile-post 7.25. Turn at the "putt-putt golf course", right beside the new "Publix" grocery store, and you'll see our church steeple. Please, come and be with us soon... and we'll do church together!
